Order Yourself A Healthier Pizza

Pizza – it’s the kind of Italian food that really sticks to the gut and makes you feel all warm and fuzzy inside. OK, maybe not that way but there’s no denying that pizza is one of the more popular foods in the world today.

There’s always a form of that somewhere. In the United States it is a best seller. It’s so good that on average 23 pounds of the stuff. To put it bluntly – that’s a lot of pizza. To put it another way – that’s a lot of pounds that people add to their body.

There’s no denying that pizza is delicious. Unfortunately, there’s also no denying that pizza is also unhealthy. Eat 23 pounds of it a year and it’s no wonder that obesity has become a very, very big issue. No matter how much you exercise, if you eat as much pizza as the average it will do you naught.

If you’re really bent on enjoying your pizza then you should try and enjoy it while making it healthier at the same time. This is so you can enjoy your pizza while not having to worry as much about all those calories and fat going to your midriff.

Start with the crust. After all, they say the foundation of all good pizzas start from here. You typically get two choices – deep dish or thick crust and the thin, crispy crust. While you may like the thicker crust you may not like the fact that it adds a couple hundred calories to the mix.

No surprise there since all that thick crust does carry a lot of calories. If you want to start healthy then do so with a thinner, less calorie laden crust.

Next are the toppings. If you’re like a lot of people you’re probably a carnivore. This means that for you the toppings have got to be meat – and lots of it. While it is tasty it also brings with it a lot of calories and fat. It is meat after all so there’s no surprise there.

A healthier alternative is to forego most of the meats and add veggies as your toppings instead. Stick with one meat that is made from the lean cuts and mix it up with vegetables. You will still get the meat taste but less of the fat and calories.

There’s no denying that cheese makes a good pizza even better. Unfortunately, there’s also no denying that it is in cheese where a good amount of calories, sodium and fat can be found. This is especially true of processed cheese.

A good way to cut down would be to forego the cheese. But then it wouldn’t be pizza would it? If you really like your cheese then opt for less of it instead of more. You can also stick with just mozzarella or better yet, ricotta which has less calories and sodium.

But even if you do all that and still eat one big pizza by yourself then there’s no point. Portion control is also important. One slice can have a minimum of 300 calories and that’s assuming the slice is not fully loaded. This means that eating more than one can really add up.
